Resurfacing FAQs

Find answers to common questions about our resurfacing process, timeframes, and care instructions.

How long does the resurfacing process take?

The timeframe for refinishing hardwood floors varies based on the dimensions of the area and the state of the floors. Generally, it takes about one to two days to complete.

How do water-based finishes differ from oil-based finishes?

A key difference between water-based and oil-based floor finishes is that oil-based options provide a warm amber tint and greater depth to the wood, while water-based finishes dry clear, thereby preserving the wood's inherent color. Moreover, oil-based finishes usually take longer to dry and have a more intense odor compared to water-based finishes. Typically, oil-based finishes are also more economical.

How many finish layers are applied?

Generally, the application involves three layers of finish: an initial layer of sealer followed by two additional coats of finish.

Recognizing the disparities among wooden floors is crucial. Although a majority of hardwood can be refinished, prefinished, or engineered, it is noteworthy that hardwood is generally not as thick. This distinction means that the refinishing approach for engineered wood may not be equivalent to that of solid wood.

Must one leave the residence while the refinishing work is being carried out?

Yes. In most instances, you can expect your house to be disrupted, at least for the time it takes for dust to clear and stain and protective coatings to dry. Oil-based finishes are the worst for fumes and can be a health risk. Proper ventilation is important during the refinishing process.
